Government Adjourns Lok Sabha Sine Die, Avoids Debate on NEET Amid Opposition Demand

New Delhi, July 3, 2024 — Hours after Rahul Gandhi wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a parliamentary debate on NEET, Congress accused the government of adjourning the Lok Sabha sine die to avoid the discussion. Gandhi emphasized the need for transparency and accountability regarding the NEET examination, urging the PM to lead the debate in Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi’s Appeal

In his letter to PM Modi, Gandhi stressed the urgency of addressing the concerns surrounding NEET. “Our students deserve answers. A parliamentary debate is the first step towards rebuilding and restoring their faith. I believe that it would be fitting if you were to lead this debate in the interest of students,” he wrote.

Despite Gandhi’s call for discussion, the Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Tuesday after the PM’s speech. The Rajya Sabha, however, will continue its proceedings with the PM scheduled to reply to the motion of thanks on the President’s address on Wednesday.

Opposition’s Concerns

Gandhi highlighted that the opposition’s request for a debate on NEET was denied in both Houses of Parliament on June 28. On Monday, the opposition reiterated their demand for a discussion, and the Lok Sabha Speaker assured them that he would discuss the matter with the government. However, no debate was scheduled.

“Today these students and their families are looking up to us, their public representatives, to take bold and decisive steps to resolve the issue,” Gandhi asserted. “The NEET examination deserves immediate attention because it has exposed the deep rot in our higher education system,” he added.

Historical Context and Paper Leak Issues

Gandhi pointed out that over the past seven years, more than 70 paper leaks have affected over two crore students, underlining the severity of the problem. The repeated incidents of paper leaks have eroded the trust of students and their families in the examination system.

Government’s Response

While the government has yet to respond directly to Gandhi’s letter, the decision to adjourn the Lok Sabha sine die has been seen by the opposition as a tactic to avoid addressing the contentious issue of NEET and the broader concerns about higher education integrity.

Conclusion

The adjournment of the Lok Sabha without addressing the NEET issue has sparked criticism from the opposition, highlighting the urgent need for reforms in the examination system. As the Rajya Sabha continues its session, all eyes will be on the government’s response to the calls for greater accountability and transparency.
