New Delhi, India — A tragic accident occurred in west Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh on Monday morning when a DTC electric bus collided with a metro pillar, resulting in the death of a 45-year-old woman and injuries to 23 other people. The collision happened at approximately 7:42 AM when the bus, operating on route 939 between Mangolpuri and Anand Vihar, struck Metro Pillar 146.
The impact of the collision was so severe that it also caused an autorickshaw behind the bus to crash into it. The driver of the bus claimed that a motorcycle attempting to overtake the bus forced him to lose control and take a sharp turn. However, police have stated that experts will conduct a thorough inspection to determine if mechanical issues, such as brake failure, played a role in the accident.
The deceased, identified as Savita, a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) sanitation worker from Sultanpuri, suffered severe head injuries and was on her way to work in Naraina when the accident occurred. Among the 23 injured were the bus driver, conductor, and several passengers. Fourteen of the injured were taken to Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, while ten were treated at Acharya Bhikshu Hospital in Moti Nagar. One 55-year-old passenger remains in critical condition in the ICU.
Auto driver Usman Khan, who was taking his wife Shahjahan and daughter Neha to RML Hospital, was also involved in the collision. Rahman, Khan’s son-in-law, described the harrowing experience, stating, “They were behind the bus when the DTC bus driver took a sharp right turn, forcing them to brake abruptly. They collided, and the people at the scene pulled him out with much effort. He fractured his hands and suffered facial injuries. My mother-in-law also sustained fractures, and Neha injured her knee.”
Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud noise akin to a heavy object falling and rushed to the scene to assist. Krishan Kumar, a 34-year-old local resident, recalled the chaotic moments following the crash. “Suddenly, I heard a loud boom, as if a heavy object had fallen. Some people and I rushed to the scene and found the bus had crashed into a pillar. The driver was trapped inside.”
The scene was one of devastation, with a broken windshield, scattered pieces of glass, and fallen trees. Passengers with head and facial injuries were seen being helped by bystanders until police and ambulances arrived. “Five or six ambulances arrived and took the injured people to the hospital,” Kumar added. Jagram, a 65-year-old tea seller, noted that an unconscious woman was among those rescued from the bus.
The DTC bus was later towed to the Madipur police post, and an FIR has been registered at the Punjabi Bagh police station. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer stated that the cause of the accident will be determined after a mechanical inspection of the bus.
The incident led to significant traffic congestion on Rohtak Road, with vehicles moving at a snail’s pace due to the obstruction. Authorities are working to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow.
