Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh (Sarhind Times)
In a significant operation, the Bihar Police arrested three individuals, including a notorious criminal from Kushinagar, for smuggling 50 grams of radioactive material suspected to be Californium. The arrests were made at the Balathari checkpoint on the UP-Bihar border. The seized material, valued at approximately ₹850 crore, has raised concerns about its intended use, which remains undisclosed.
The suspects, identified as Chhotelal Prasad from Tamkuhi Raj in Kushinagar, Chandan Gupta from Gopalganj, and Chandan Ram from Kusahar Mathia, were apprehended with a motorcycle and four mobile phones. The Special Task Force (STF), Special Operations Group (SOG), and the District Intelligence Unit (DIU) conducted the operation based on a tip-off.
The suspected Californium, a highly radioactive substance not found naturally, is under investigation by the Atomic Energy Department. A special forensic team has been called to handle the material and confirm its identity. Californium, first synthesized in 1950 in the United States, is known for its rarity and high value, making this bust particularly significant.
SP Swarn Prabhat of Gopalganj confirmed the seizure and stated that the material is believed to have been smuggled from Gujarat. Further investigation is ongoing, with the police in contact with Puducherry authorities to gather more information.
Chhotelal Prasad, one of the arrested individuals, has a criminal history with multiple cases registered against him in the Tamkuhi Raj police station. The police have become more vigilant following this incident, recognizing the potential dangers posed by such radioactive materials.
As the investigation unfolds, the authorities are working to uncover the full extent of this smuggling operation and its possible implications.
