Manipur, India – July 6, 2024:

A civil society group representing the Kuki tribes in Manipur has sought urgent assistance from the Assam Rifles and local police following a series of violent attacks targeting key members of their community. The incidents, which occurred in the hill district of Churachandpur, have heightened tensions in an already volatile region.

Details of the Incidents

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) reported that armed individuals broke into the home of ITLF Secretary Muan Tombing. In his absence, the assailants reportedly “kicked doors, dragged his wife across the floor, and snatched his daughter’s phone.” Thankfully, Tombing was not at home during the attack, averting potentially severe harm to him.

In a separate incident, the chief of the Young Paite Association was kidnapped from Kanaan village. After being subjected to extensive interrogation and severe torture, he was eventually released. Additionally, shots were fired at the residence of Singngat MLA Chinlunthang, further escalating the situation. The ITLF suspects that the same group is responsible for these coordinated attacks.

Call for Action

The ITLF has urgently called on law enforcement agencies to intervene and prevent further violence. The forum emphasized that the attackers and their supporters are intent on disrupting peace and unity within the Kuki community. They have appealed to the Assam Rifles and the police to take immediate and decisive action to safeguard the residents of Churachandpur.

Background of the Conflict

Since May 2023, ethnic violence has plagued Manipur, primarily between the valley-dominant Meitei community and the Kuki tribes. The conflict has resulted in over 220 deaths and the internal displacement of nearly 50,000 people. The Meiteis, who dominate the valley areas, seek inclusion under the Scheduled Tribes category, while the Kuki tribes, citing discrimination and unequal resource allocation, are advocating for a separate administration within Manipur.

Conclusion

The recent attacks underscore the urgent need for intervention to restore peace and security in the region. The Kuki community continues to push for their demands amidst growing tensions and violence. Law enforcement agencies face the challenge of addressing these incidents promptly to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of all residents.
