Chennai, July 9, 2024 — Veeramani, the brother of murdered Tamil Nadu Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief K Armstrong, has provided a harrowing account of the politician’s final moments as he was brutally hacked to death by six unidentified men on July 5. With visible injuries, including a bandage wrapped around his head, Veeramani recounted the traumatic incident that left his brother dead and him severely injured.

The Night of the Attack

Veeramani revealed that around 7 pm on July 5, while he was at a temple, he heard a commotion and saw people running towards it. He soon realized his brother was under attack near an under-construction house. Veeramani’s efforts to save Armstrong were thwarted by the attackers, who were armed with sickles.

“When I heard the commotion, I ran towards the spot, screaming. But I saw three men coming towards me with sickles. Two of them tried to attack me, but missed, and I tripped. When I fell on the road, one of the attackers hit me on the head and another on my back. Despite the pain, I kept running towards my brother. I saw Armstrong in a pool of blood. I tried to lift him up, but as I too had lost blood, I felt dizzy,” Veeramani recalled in a video.

A Desperate Struggle

Veeramani highlighted the swift turn of events, describing how the attackers’ bikes were parked along the stretch. “I didn’t see the culprits. It was just 10 seconds. All I could see was the men with sickles running towards me,” he said. Despite his injuries, Veeramani was determined to reach his brother, only to find Armstrong gasping for breath and unable to help him.

Aftermath and Investigation

Veeramani was taken to the hospital by his wife. CCTV footage later surfaced, showing the murder suspects fleeing the scene. Eight men have been arrested in connection with the attack, and three more have been detained. The police suspect previous enmity as the motive, but Armstrong’s family believes the true perpetrators are still at large and have demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.

Calls for Justice

BSP supremo Mayawati, who visited Chennai to pay homage to Armstrong, has also demanded a CBI investigation and questioned the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu. Armstrong was laid to rest in Pothur, Tiruvallur district, following an almost eight-hour funeral procession. The burial location was decided after the Madras High Court rejected the family’s plea to bury him at the BSP office in Chennai, citing potential safety concerns.

Court’s Decision

The High Court emphasized the need to avoid a situation similar to the Hathras stampede, suggesting the burial take place in a location identified by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). The Tamil Nadu government opposed the burial at the BSP office due to its residential location, but later agreed to the Pothur site on land belonging to Armstrong’s relative.

Conclusion

The brutal murder of K Armstrong has shaken the Tamil Nadu community, prompting calls for a thorough investigation and justice for the slain BSP chief. As the investigation unfolds, the demands for accountability and transparency continue to grow. For further updates on this case and other significant news, stay tuned to Sarhind Times.
