New Delhi, July 9, 2024 — In a distressing incident at IGI Airport, an 84-year-old woman, Shashikala Goswami, suffered severe health complications due to the negligence of private airline staff. Her son, Sushil Goswami, has alleged that the staff’s indifference nearly cost his mother her life.

The Incident

Shashikala, who suffers from high diabetes and other serious ailments, arrived at Delhi from Jaipur with her son Sushil on a private airline. Upon landing, Sushil requested a wheelchair for his mother. The airline staff assured him that a wheelchair would arrive shortly, but they then became preoccupied, leaving the elderly woman waiting in the aircraft.

As the aircraft gradually emptied, the pilot and co-pilot left, turning off the air conditioning. The lack of ventilation exacerbated Shashikala’s condition, causing her breathing difficulties. Despite repeated requests, no wheelchair arrived. In desperation, Sushil carried his mother out of the plane.

Desperate Measures

Once outside, Sushil begged the baggage handling staff for assistance. Moved by their plight, one of the staff members provided his own wheelchair for Shashikala. They seated her near the aircraft, but the journey to Terminal 3 (T-3) remained.

During this time, Shashikala’s blood sugar level dropped critically low, causing her to lose consciousness. With great difficulty, Sushil managed to get her to T-3, where they were met by his elder brother, Avneesh. The family then hurriedly transported Shashikala to their car and took her home for medical attention.

A Harrowing Journey

The ordeal began with their flight, originally scheduled to depart from Jaipur at 7 PM, being delayed by 90 minutes. The flight finally landed at Delhi Airport around 9:22 PM. By the time Shashikala and Sushil left the airport, it was almost 11 PM.

After reaching home, Shashikala’s blood sugar level was measured at a dangerous 56. Immediate medical intervention and a sweet drink helped stabilize her condition. Sushil accused the airline staff of gross negligence, stating, “At one moment, I thought I might lose my mother today. Their negligence caused her health to deteriorate. It’s only because of timely help that she survived.”

Background and Response

Sushil, a professional writer and content creator for a major political party, divides his time between Jaipur, Delhi, and Mumbai. His mother, Shashikala, lives with him in Jaipur, while his elder brother, Avneesh, resides in Gurugram. On Sunday, Shashikala was traveling to Delhi with Sushil to visit Avneesh.

Despite the severe distress caused, the family has not yet filed an official complaint. However, the incident has raised serious concerns about the treatment of elderly passengers and the responsibilities of airline staff.

Conclusion

This unfortunate incident at IGI Airport has highlighted the need for better care and attention towards elderly passengers. The negligence of the airline staff not only caused severe health issues for Shashikala but also put her life at risk. The family is now urging airlines to adopt more humane and responsible practices to ensure such incidents do not recur.
