Lucknow, July 9, 2024 — Following the demolition of Akbarnagar, the administrative authorities have initiated a survey to demolish illegal constructions in Rahimnagar for the Kukrail Riverfront project. The survey began on Monday, with the first 20 houses marked with red signs, leaving residents in distress.
The Survey and Its Impact
A joint team led by Additional District Magistrate Rakesh Kumar and Executive Engineer Mukesh Vaishya of the Irrigation Department commenced the survey at 11:30 AM near the Rahimnagar bundh, within a 50-meter radius of Kukrail. The team surveyed approximately one kilometer of the area, marking the land within the Kukrail Riverfront project’s scope with red signs.
As the team entered Rahimnagar, residents, including men, women, and children, came out of their homes. The marking of houses with red signs led to women crying and questioning why no action was taken when these houses were being built. They pointed out that they have been paying house tax and water tax for the past 40 years and now face eviction due to the riverfront project.
Administrative Actions and Notices
Officials stated that the owners of the marked houses would receive notices from the LDA (Lucknow Development Authority) instructing them to vacate their homes. Failure to comply will result in the use of bulldozers to demolish the structures.
Survey Challenges
The narrow lanes posed challenges for the survey team, prompting them to climb onto the roofs of houses to get a better view and measure the alignment with the Kukrail bundh. The team faced residents’ anger during this process. Due to the difficulties in marking land and houses in the narrow alleys, the team will use GPS for the survey starting Tuesday.
Claims of Ancestral Land
During the survey, a resident named Sunil presented documents to Additional District Magistrate Rakesh Kumar, claiming that the surveyed land belonged to him. He stated that the land was given to his family in exchange for their ancestral land, where the PAC headquarters now stands. The registration of the plots in Rahimnagar was done in 1962 in the name of his grandfather, Girja Shankar. The Additional District Magistrate assured that the survey is ongoing and the matter will be considered.
Conclusion
The Kukrail Riverfront project has brought both hope for development and despair for the affected residents. The administration’s survey and subsequent marking of houses for demolition have led to significant distress among the residents, who fear losing their homes. As the project progresses, the authorities will need to address the residents’ concerns and ensure fair compensation and relocation measures.
