New Delhi, July 25, 2024 – In a strategic move, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, held his first masterclass on Wednesday. He met with the 20 speakers selected by the Congress to challenge the government during the Union Budget discussion.
Strategic Focus: Gandhi emphasized the importance of carefully selecting speakers to effectively take on the government. He instructed his colleagues to focus on the broader issues rather than targeting specific states that received benefits. “We should not be seen as opposing what they got. We should focus on those who missed out,” he said.
Inspired by Congress Manifesto: Gandhi pointed out that the Employment-Linked Incentive Scheme and apprenticeship initiatives in the budget appear to be inspired by the Congress manifesto. He highlighted the ‘Pehli Naukri Pakki’ scheme from the Congress Nyay Patra as the source of these ideas.
National Focus: Gandhi stressed that the Congress, being a national party, should avoid focusing on local issues or criticizing states like Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. Instead, the party should address the broader failure of the government to ensure jobs, control rising prices, and support the middle class.
Selected Speakers: The chosen speakers reflect Gandhi’s strategic planning. For instance, Kumari Selja, a Dalit woman leader from poll-bound Haryana, and Praniti Shinde from poll-bound Maharashtra, were selected to address key issues relevant to their states.
Boycotting Niti Aayog: The Congress has decided to boycott the Niti Aayog, arguing that the budget undermines the federal structure and criticizes the financial sops given to Bihar and Andhra Pradesh as attempts to bolster the government.
Gandhi’s Vision: Gandhi aims for the Congress to act as a responsible national party, championing the causes of states that were neglected in the budget. The party’s focus will be on highlighting the government’s failures and advocating for equitable development across all states.
