In a development that has raised eyebrows, a property dealer accused of kidnapping and raping a minor girl has married the victim in a ceremony held at Budhiya Mata Temple, Padri Bazaar, Gorakhpur. The wedding took place on Tuesday, with both families in attendance, even as legal proceedings against the accused are ongoing.
The case, which came to light on July 27, involves a 19-year-old girl who filed a complaint with the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). The victim, who was a minor at the time of the alleged incidents, claimed that the accused, Vikas Nishad, forcibly abducted her in 2022 and took her to a secluded area where he assaulted her. Vikas allegedly recorded the assault and used the video to blackmail the victim, continuing the abuse over the next two years.
The situation escalated further on June 29, 2024, when Vikas once again coerced the victim into meeting him under the threat of leaking the video. Following this, the victim confided in her mother, who then approached the SSP, leading to the registration of a case and the initiation of a police search for Vikas.
However, before the investigation could proceed further, a mediation between the families, facilitated by village elders, resulted in an agreement for the two to marry. The wedding was solemnized at Budhiya Mata Temple, with the temple’s serene setting juxtaposed against the complex emotions and legal challenges surrounding the union.
The victim, who is currently a second-year Bachelor of Arts student, remains at her mother’s home following the marriage. Vikas, who has only completed his high school education, has indicated that he will bring his new wife to his home after completing some ongoing work.
The police investigation continues, with the victim’s statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) set to be recorded in court. This statement will be crucial in determining the future course of action in this controversial case.
