GURGAON: Gurgaon experienced a welcome change in weather on Sunday as dark clouds covered the sky and light showers graced several parts of the city. The maximum temperature reached 35.3 degrees Celsius, just slightly above the seasonal average, while the minimum temperature rose to 27.5 degrees Celsius from the previous day’s 26.7 degrees.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for August 20 and 21, predicting heavy rainfall in isolated areas across Haryana. The weather department has cautioned residents about possible waterlogging and traffic congestion in some parts of the city. Authorities have assured that they are fully prepared to manage any emergencies arising from the anticipated downpour.

“Moderate to heavy rainfall over southern parts of Haryana is likely on August 20 and 21. Active monsoon conditions have slightly reduced in the area,” said an IMD official. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 37 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively, until August 21.

Farmers have been advised to postpone irrigation and intercultural operations in their fields, while the district administration has urged citizens to avoid going near rivers, ponds, and other water bodies during the heavy rainfall. The showers are expected to provide much-needed relief from the humid weather conditions that have persisted over the past week.

The city’s air quality index (AQI) remained in the moderate category on Sunday, with a reading of 152. Meanwhile, several areas of Delhi also experienced rainfall, with localized showers recorded in Mayur Vihar, Delhi University, and the Ridge area. The capital’s Safdarjung base station, however, recorded only a trace amount of rain.

The IMD has forecast very light rain on Monday for Delhi, with a generally cloudy sky. Despite the brief showers, Delhi’s AQI improved, marking 22 consecutive days of satisfactory air quality, the best streak since 2020.
