Gurugram – A 21-year-old man was arrested for allegedly strangulating his brother-in-law to death and setting his body on fire using turpentine oil at an under-construction house in Sector 15, Part 1, police said on Tuesday. The incident occurred on the night of July 18 and 19.

Details of the Incident

The suspect, identified as Rajesh Kumar alias Chotu, was employed as a guard at the construction site. He was arrested from Sector 29 on Sunday night and has been booked under sections 103(1) (murder) and 3(5) (common intention), 238(a) (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Civil Lines police station, based on a complaint filed by site contractor Laxman Prasad. Kumar has been remanded to police custody.

Inspector Arvind Kumar, station house officer (SHO) of Civil Lines police station, identified the deceased as 32-year-old Gore Lal from Chattarpur, Madhya Pradesh. Lal had been living with his wife, who was suffering from multiple medical complications for the past two months.

Motive Behind the Crime

According to police investigations, Lal was accused of spending money on liquor instead of medications for his wife and assaulting her. Rajesh Kumar had repeatedly tried to convince Lal to take better care of his sister, but to no avail. As a result, Kumar decided to take matters into his own hands.

On the night of the incident, Kumar invited Lal to dinner at the work site and got him drunk. He then allegedly strangled Lal, poured turpentine oil over his body, and set it on fire. The police were informed about the body on July 19 by workers at the site, who also reported that the guard was missing.

Police Investigation and Arrest

The police discovered that the site had been subjected to extensive digging and construction work. After a thorough investigation, they tracked down and arrested Rajesh Kumar. Inspector Arvind Kumar confirmed the details of the incident and the arrest.

The victim’s family has not pressed any charges against the contractor. Lal’s 19-year-old son, Ramesh Kumar, submitted a written statement ruling out any foul play in connection with his father’s death. An inquiry under section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 has been launched in the case.
