Maharashtra BJP Leadership Stays Intact as Party Gears Up for Assembly Polls
New Delhi — The Maharashtra BJP core committee convened at the party headquarters under the leadership of BJP National President JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the party’s strategy for the upcoming assembly elections. Despite the party’s disappointing performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Union Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that there would be no changes in the party’s leadership in Maharashtra.
Leadership Stability Amid Speculation
“There will be no change in leadership in Maharashtra,” Piyush Goyal announced to reporters after the core group meeting. This statement comes amid widespread speculation that Rao Saheb Patil might be appointed as the state president. There was also uncertainty about the future of the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) within the ruling alliance.
Focus on Election Strategy
Piyush Goyal revealed that BJP leaders discussed strategies to ensure the re-election of the MahaYuti alliance, comprising the Shiv Sena, BJP, and NCP, in the forthcoming assembly elections. The meeting was attended by senior BJP leaders, including BL Santosh, Bhupender Yadav, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Chandrakant Patil, Pankaja Munde, Raosaheb Danve, and Vinod Tawde.
Disappointing Lok Sabha Results
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured only nine seats in Maharashtra, a significant drop from its 2019 tally of 23. The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance had won 41 out of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra in the 2019 elections. However, this cumulative number for the current National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was reduced to 17 seats – seven for the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and one for an NCP member.
Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis’ Commitment
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who had offered to resign to focus on party organization and assembly poll preparations, emphasized the coalition’s resolve to win the upcoming elections. “We have prepared a blueprint for the upcoming assembly elections and how to win it along with the MahaYuti alliance partners,” Fadnavis stated after the meeting. He also mentioned that the meeting reviewed the party’s performance in the Lok Sabha elections, noting the narrow vote share difference of just 0.3 percent between the ruling MahaYuti and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
Addressing Strengths and Shortcomings
Fadnavis highlighted that the leaders discussed in detail the strengths and shortcomings of the BJP in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. The comprehensive analysis aims to bolster the party’s strategies and fortify its position ahead of the assembly polls scheduled for September-October.
