Kolkata, West Bengal: The tragic rape and murder of a woman post-graduate trainee doctor inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has sent shockwaves across the country, sparking widespread protests and calls for justice. The body of the trainee doctor was discovered on Friday morning, and a civic volunteer was arrested the following day in connection with the heinous crime.

The accused, who was not officially associated with the hospital but frequently visited the premises, has been sent to 14-day police custody following his arrest. According to police reports, after committing the crime, the accused returned to his place and went to sleep, only to wake up the next morning to wash the clothes he had worn during the crime in an attempt to destroy evidence. However, police recovered bloodstains on his shoes, further implicating him in the crime.

The crime scene has been the focus of intense investigation, with police officers from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and forensic experts collecting samples from the seminar hall. Although the police have not found any evidence suggesting the involvement of others, they continue to review CCTV footage and interview staff who were on duty the night of the incident.

The incident has sparked massive protests by junior doctors, house staff, and post-graduate trainees across state-run hospitals in West Bengal. The agitating doctors have suspended all emergency and non-emergency services, demanding swift justice for their slain colleague and greater security measures in medical establishments.

City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal has visited the hospital twice in three days, assuring the agitating doctors of a transparent investigation. However, the protests show no signs of abating, with the doctors vowing to continue their demonstrations until their demands are fully met.

The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association of India (FORDA) has expressed solidarity with the protesting doctors and has called for a nationwide halt of elective services in hospitals on Monday. The incident has also prompted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to vow to seek the death penalty for the perpetrator.

In response to the growing unrest, Kolkata Police have deployed additional forces at the hospital to ensure the safety of healthcare workers. The hospital authorities have expelled two security personnel for failing to properly discharge their duties, which may have contributed to the crime.

The tragic incident is not only a reflection of systemic failures within the hospital but also highlights broader societal issues that require immediate attention. As protests continue, the call for justice grows louder, resonating across the nation.
