Jaipur, August 11, 2024:
In a shocking incident, a woman from Jaipur has filed a case of dowry harassment and physical assault against her husband, an Assistant Commissioner in the Income Tax Department, based in Ahmedabad. The victim, identified as Purva Bagri, lodged the complaint at the Chitrakoot Police Station, accusing her husband Chirag Jhagwal and his family of subjecting her to mental and physical torture for dowry.
According to the police, Purva, who is currently staying at her parental home in Jaipur, alleged that her husband and in-laws had been pressuring her to bring ₹1 crore in cash and a luxury SUV, either a Volvo or a Fortuner, as dowry. Despite her family’s financial struggles, they had managed to host a lavish engagement ceremony at the Rambagh Palace Hotel in May 2022, where they gifted ₹5 lakh in cash and several expensive items, including a diamond ring.
However, her in-laws were not satisfied and demanded more money and a luxury vehicle as part of the wedding arrangements. Purva’s parents, unable to meet these exorbitant demands, expressed their inability to provide the additional dowry. This led to friction between the families, with Chirag’s parents, Mahesh Chandra and Kavita, expressing their displeasure and accusing Purva’s family of insulting them in society.
On the wedding day in December 2022, Purva’s family gave ₹51,000 in cash to the groom during the procession and an additional ₹1.5 lakh during the wedding rituals, along with ₹7 lakh during the sacred pheras. However, these gestures did not appease Chirag’s family, who accused Purva’s family of dishonoring them. Tensions escalated to the point where Chirag’s brother and parents left the wedding venue, threatening to cancel the bride’s departure to her new home.
Purva further alleged that after moving to Ahmedabad with her husband, the harassment continued, with Chirag and his family repeatedly pressuring her to bring more money from her parents. The situation worsened when Chirag physically assaulted her, prompting Purva to leave her marital home and return to Jaipur.
On July 16, Purva filed a formal complaint against her husband and his family at the Chitrakoot Police Station. A police official stated that following Purva’s medical examination, a case has been registered against Chirag Jhagwal. The police have recorded statements from all members of Purva’s family and are in the process of summoning the accused for questioning. Further legal action will be taken as per the law.
