High Court Orders Haryana Government to Open Shambhu Border Within a Week

In a significant development, the High Court has directed the Haryana government to reopen the Shambhu border within a week. The decision has brought relief to the residents and traders of Ambala and the adjoining areas of Punjab, who have been facing substantial economic losses due to the prolonged closure of the border.

Background of the Border Closure

The Shambhu border, connecting Haryana and Punjab, has been closed for 149 days, causing severe disruptions in trade and daily commutes. The closure was a result of the farmers’ protests under the Samyukta Kisan Morcha banner that began on February 13. Concrete barricades were installed by the Haryana Police to prevent the farmers from advancing, leading to clashes and a complete halt in movement across the border.

Economic Impact

The prolonged closure has resulted in significant financial losses, with traders estimating over ₹500 crores in damages, and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) reporting losses exceeding ₹108 crores. The reopening of the border is expected to rejuvenate the local economy and bring much-needed relief to the affected traders.

Farmers’ Response

Following the court’s order, there has been increased activity among the farmers at the protest site. Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher stated that they would review the court order with their legal advisors before deciding on their next steps. Pandher emphasized that the farmers had always maintained that the Haryana government’s barricades were the main obstacle, a claim now validated by the court’s decision.

Current Situation at Shambhu Border

Presently, farmers are stationed in front of the checkpoint on the highway, with temporary tents set up for their stay. The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha has established a permanent presence on the Ambala-Ludhiana highway, complete with large sheds for meetings and daily gatherings. On the other side of the barricades, Ambala police and RAF units are stationed, maintaining a heavy security presence.

Official Statements

Dr. Shaleen, DC Ambala, stated, “We have not yet received the government orders. Appropriate actions will be taken once the orders are received.” Meanwhile, Tejveer Singh, Media Incharge of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, reiterated their intent to march to Delhi, pending a review of the High Court’s order.

Traders’ Reactions

Ramratan Garg, Coordinator of the Jan Jagriti Organization, welcomed the court’s decision, stating, “If the border is not opened within seven days, we will express our displeasure again. The reopening will bring relief to hundreds of traders.” Mohan Goyal, President of the Wholesale Cloth Market Association, expressed optimism, saying, “Traders are happy with the High Court’s decision. The reopening of the Punjab border will hopefully revive the long-stalled business activities.”

As both the administration and the traders await the official government orders, the reopening of the Shambhu border marks a crucial step towards restoring normalcy and economic stability in the region.
