The Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, introduced by the central government on Thursday, sparked a fiery debate in Parliament, particularly between Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The bill, presented by Union Minority and Law Minister Kiren Rijiju in the Lok Sabha, faced strong opposition, with members of the Congress party labeling it as an infringement on rights.
During the session, Akhilesh Yadav vocally opposed the bill, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of catering to a small group of extreme supporters through this legislation. He expressed concern that the bill was part of a broader strategy to target and sell off Waqf properties, similar to how other lands such as defense, railway, and Nazul lands have been dealt with.
Akhilesh stated, “The truth is that the BJP is bringing this bill for its desperate, frustrated, and extreme supporters. Today, even the rights of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha are being undermined. We must fight against this. I oppose this bill.”
In response, Home Minister Amit Shah robustly defended the bill and countered Akhilesh’s accusations. Their exchange has quickly gone viral on social media, with many sharing clips of the heated debate.
Akhilesh Yadav later took to X (formerly Twitter), posting, “This Waqf Board amendment is just an excuse. The real target is the sale of lands, like those of defense, railways, and Nazul. Waqf Board lands are just another link in the BJP’s chain of beneficiary schemes.”
The Samajwadi Party has demanded that the central government provide a written guarantee that Waqf Board properties will not be sold.
