Gurugram’s Dhanwapur Underpass Nears Completion, Set to Ease Commute for Thousands

Gurugram: The much-anticipated Dhanwapur underpass on the Delhi-Rewari railway line is nearing completion, with officials hopeful of opening it to the public by mid-September. The underpass is expected to significantly ease the commute for residents of nearly half a dozen colonies, including Sectors 4 and 7, by providing direct connectivity to the Dwarka Expressway. Additionally, this new route will offer an alternative passage for residents of the older parts of the city.

The construction of the Dhanwapur underpass comes as a relief to the local population, who have long faced difficulties due to the frequent closure of the Dhanwapur railway crossing. The heavy train traffic on the Delhi-Rewari line often forces people to wait for extended periods, while others have had to take a longer detour via the Daulatabad flyover, adding 3-4 kilometers to their journey. Repeated pleas to the railway and district administration to expedite the underpass construction had gone unheeded until recently.

Earlier setbacks, including the collapse of a section of the underpass wall, had delayed the project. However, last month, the district administration urged the Public Works Department (PWD) to expedite the remaining work. The contractor has since made significant progress, addressing issues such as water seepage from the railway tracks above. According to Gajendra Yadav, Executive Engineer at the PWD, the underpass is now nearly complete and will soon be opened for public use.

Underpass Details

The Dhanwapur underpass, approximately 900 meters long, has been constructed at a cost of around ₹20 crore. It connects Surya Vihar to Dhanwapur, providing residents with a direct link to the Dwarka Expressway. The completion of the underpass is expected to alleviate the traffic burden on the Daulatabad flyover and the Basai railway overbridge, which have been the primary routes for reaching New Gurugram.

Relief for Two Lakh Residents

Once operational, the Dhanwapur underpass will benefit nearly two lakh residents from areas such as Surya Vihar, Sectors 4 and 7, Laxman Vihar, Ashok Vihar, and Jyoti Park. Additionally, athletes heading to the sports stadium in Dhanwapur village will also find it easier to reach their destination. Currently, pedestrians and cyclists often cross the railway tracks on foot to get to Dhanwapur village, a practice that will no longer be necessary once the underpass is open.

Manoj Mishra, a resident of Surya Vihar, expressed optimism about the project, noting that the underpass will connect the area directly to the Dwarka Expressway, allowing residents to bypass the city when traveling to Delhi or Jaipur.

The PWD has fast-tracked the final touches, including painting and lighting, with plans to inaugurate the underpass in September.
