Gurugram: A Gurugram resident fell victim to a sextortion scam, losing ₹78,999 to a gang, police reported on Thursday. The incident began on April 30 when the victim received a WhatsApp video call from a nude woman who convinced him to undress while recording the act. Shortly after, he was contacted by an individual posing as a crime branch officer who demanded ₹20,000 to prevent the video from being circulated online. Fearing exposure, the victim transferred ₹20,000 initially and then an additional ₹58,999 upon further threats.

Complaint and Investigation

According to the complaint filed, the victim transferred the money to a mobile UPI number before realizing the scam. An FIR has been registered under sections 419 (cheating by impersonation) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC at the cyber crime west police station on Wednesday.

A senior police officer mentioned that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the accused. “We are tracing the digital footprints and analyzing the transaction details to catch the perpetrators,” he added.

Victim’s Account

The victim, in his complaint, narrated the sequence of events that led to the extortion. He explained how the threats and demands for money escalated, causing him to lose a substantial amount before he approached the police.

Precautions Against Sextortion

Authorities have urged the public to be cautious of unsolicited video calls and to report any suspicious activities to the police immediately. They also advised against sharing personal or compromising information online to avoid such scams.
