Gurgaon, 10 July 2024 – The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is set to discuss a series of transformative infrastructure projects at its upcoming board meeting on Wednesday. Key initiatives on the agenda include the construction of flyovers, the redevelopment of the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), the expansion of water treatment capacity, the acquisition of electric buses, and the installation of 10,000 CCTV cameras.
The GMDA board will present its Rs 2,887 crore budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, alongside projects worth Rs 3,500 crore for approval by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who will chair the meeting in Chandigarh. This marks the first GMDA board meeting after a year and the first chaired by Saini, who took office in April this year.
One of the pivotal proposals requiring administrative approval is the construction of two flyovers at the intersections of sectors 45-46-51-52 and sectors 85-86-89-90. Additionally, a significant Rs 634 crore project aims to redevelop the Tau Devi Lal Stadium, increasing its seating capacity to 35,000 for the cricket ground and 15,000 for the football ground, along with the construction of a swimming pool.
The redevelopment of the SPR from Vatika Chowk to the CPR-SPR junction on the Delhi-Jaipur highway (NH-8) is also a major focus. This project, initially planned in March 2019 and approved in June 2022, involves revamping a 14km stretch by building eight flyovers, widening carriageways to six lanes, and adding service lanes at an estimated cost of Rs 845.5 crore. However, concerns about the necessity of three flyovers between Vatika Chowk and NH-8 due to low traffic volume led to a revision of the plan. The updated proposal now includes a signal-free elevated corridor to improve connectivity to the Dwarka Expressway and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
A senior GMDA official explained, “The redevelopment plan from Vatika Chowk to NH-8 has been revised to a signal-free elevated corridor to provide connectivity to Dwarka Expressway and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Once approved, it will ease congestion and improve connectivity to UER-II.”
The GMDA’s water division has proposed projects worth Rs 1,400 crore to enhance the city’s water supply, upgrade its drain network, and increase sewage treatment capacity. This includes adding filtration units at the Chandu Budhera and Basai water treatment plants, boosting each plant’s capacity by 100 million liters per day. The estimated cost for this project is Rs 325 crore.
Furthermore, the GMDA plans to procure 200 electric buses under the PM e-Sewa scheme by the end of this financial year. These buses will replace the existing fleet of 200 CNG buses, which will be phased out by 2029. “We have proposed augmenting 200 electric buses for the next financial year to boost public transport. We are also working on improving supporting infrastructure such as bus depots for better operation of city buses,” noted a GMDA official.
These initiatives reflect the GMDA’s commitment to enhancing Gurgaon’s infrastructure and public services, aiming to provide seamless connectivity, improved public transport, and enhanced water management for the city’s residents.
