GMDA Plans Foot Overbridge on Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road to Enhance Pedestrian Safety and Ease Traffic Flow

Estimated read time 3 min read

Gurgaon, July 2, 2024 — In a bid to improve pedestrian safety and ease traffic congestion, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has announced plans to construct a foot overbridge on the heavily trafficked Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road near the Maruti factory. The project aims to provide a safer crossing for the numerous factory workers, employees from Udyog Vihar, and residents from surrounding areas like Sukhrali, Carterpuri, and Mullahera who use this stretch daily.

Project Details and Funding

The GMDA has engaged a consultant to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the foot overbridge. This report will include structural design, safety measures, and the expected impact on traffic flow. The project is part of a broader initiative to tackle crowding and ensure smooth traffic in busy areas.

The construction of the foot overbridge will be funded through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. In addition to the Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road project, GMDA has planned four more footbridges at key locations across the city:

  1. Raheja Mall on Sohna Road
  2. Near Fortis Hospital
  3. Sheetla Mata Temple
  4. Sector 14 Market

These additional footbridges come with an estimated cost of Rs 16.4 crore and are expected to be completed within 18 months of commencement. Tenders for these projects have already been floated, with the process anticipated to conclude within the next three months.

Importance and Impact

The Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road foot overbridge is particularly significant given the high number of pedestrians, including factory workers and local residents, who use this road. The area often experiences heavy footfall, leading to traffic congestion and safety concerns.

“We have engaged an agency for preparing the DPR that will include the structural design, safety measures, and impact on the traffic flow,” a senior GMDA official said. “The footbridge will provide a safer crossing point for many workers and residents who use this road daily. Once the DPR is completed and approved, we will float the tender.”

Long-Standing Plans

The GMDA has been planning this project since 2021 but faced challenges in finalizing the construction model. With the engagement of a consultant and the preparation of a detailed project report, the project is now moving forward. The authority aims to ensure that the footbridge not only enhances safety but also improves the overall traffic flow in the area.

The construction of these footbridges reflects GMDA’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and addressing the needs of pedestrians in Gurgaon. By leveraging CSR funding and meticulous planning, the authority is set to make significant strides in improving the city’s transportation network.
