GMDA Launches Massive Demolition Drive, Clears Illegal Encroachments Along Sector Roads in Gurugram

In a significant move to reclaim public spaces and ensure the smooth functioning of urban infrastructure, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) conducted a large-scale demolition drive late Monday evening. The operation targeted illegal encroachments along a 2.8-kilometre stretch of sector-dividing roads and green belts in several key areas, including Sectors 33, 38, 32, 46, and 47.

The enforcement drive was initiated following numerous complaints from residents, who had reported the illegal establishment of shanties, shops, and vendors obstructing the roads and green belts. According to RS Bhath, the district town planner for GMDA, the operation began at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, a location that had become a hotspot for unauthorized commercial activities.

Details of the Demolition Drive:

The enforcement team, during its operation, demolished a total of:

  • 36 hutments: Temporary structures that had been set up without any authorization.
  • 12 tea stalls: These makeshift stalls were operating without permits from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG).
  • 25 temporary shops: Vendors who had set up shops along the roadside were also removed.
  • 2 building material shops: These shops were illegally operating in the area, contributing to clutter and encroachment.
  • 4 plant nurseries: These nurseries were using public green belts for commercial purposes without permission.
  • 3 dhabas: Roadside eateries that had been established without legal clearance were demolished.

RS Bhath emphasized that the GMDA is committed to maintaining the integrity of public spaces and that illegal encroachments will not be tolerated. “We have received several complaints from area residents, and action was taken against illegal commercial activities being carried out in the green belts and along the carriageway of the road. The vendors who got permission from MCG could operate but were asked to follow the norms strictly. Illegal encroachments will not be allowed along GMDA roads,” Bhath stated.

Ongoing Efforts:

This demolition drive is part of an ongoing series of operations by the GMDA, which has been actively removing illegal commercial units along sector roads following persistent complaints from residents and Resident Welfare Associations (RWA). The GMDA’s enforcement wing has been conducting similar drives over the past month to address the growing concern of unauthorized encroachments that disrupt the planned urban infrastructure.

The GMDA has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all commercial activities within its jurisdiction are carried out in compliance with the law and that public spaces remain accessible and safe for all residents.

Looking Ahead:

As the GMDA continues its efforts to clear illegal encroachments, residents and RWAs have expressed support for the authority’s actions, hoping for a more orderly and regulated urban environment in Gurugram.
