In response to the severe damage caused by recent monsoon rains, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has initiated urgent repairs on several critical road stretches across the city. The ongoing repairs are aimed at ensuring that the roads remain motorable, despite the challenges posed by the monsoon season.
Immediate Repair Efforts:
GMDA Chief Engineer Arun Dhankhar confirmed that the authority has begun temporary repairs on badly damaged stretches of roads to ensure that traffic can continue to flow smoothly. The stop-gap repairs are being conducted using substrate material, with plans for permanent restoration scheduled after the monsoon ends.
The heavy rains that lashed Gurugram last week led to significant damage in several areas. Notably, portions of Basai Road caved in at Manohar Nagar and Arjun Nagar, necessitating immediate attention. Additionally, a 300-meter stretch of the road between Sector 85/86, from Elan Mall to Dadi Sati Chowk, has been severely damaged due to waterlogging and the spilling of sewage water from Sikanderpur village.
Challenges and Public Concerns:
Residents and local authorities have raised concerns about the impact of these damaged roads on daily commutes. Pravin Malik, president of the United Associations of New Gurugram, an umbrella group of Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), emphasized the importance of repairing the Elan Mall to Dadi Sati Chowk road as a priority. “The road from Elan Mall to Dadi Sati Chowk is part of a multi-utility corridor and was expected to be the lifeline of the area, but it has turned out to be a major hassle. Apart from the recent waterlogging, sewage water from neighboring Sikanderpur village is spilling on this section and it has badly damaged the road. The authorities must repair it on priority,” Malik stated.
In response, Dhankhar assured that the GMDA is actively identifying the source of the water that has caused the damage near Elan Mall and will be prioritizing repairs in this area.
Other Affected Areas:
Several other key road stretches in Gurugram have also suffered significant damage due to the monsoon rains. The Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) is one such area, where large potholes have developed over a 300-meter stretch in front of the SPR police post. This has resulted in frequent traffic jams, compounding the challenges faced by daily commuters.
Rahul Yadav, a resident of Sector 95, highlighted the inconvenience caused by the damaged roads. “My office is on Golf Course Extension Road, and every day, due to the damaged road in front of the SPR police post, there are traffic jams. Earlier, there were jams at this location as there is a traffic signal there, but the problem has been compounded due to damaged roads,” Yadav explained.
The road near the Civil Hospital in Sector 10 has also been damaged, leading to traffic congestion in the area. Another key stretch — from the Dwarka Expressway cloverleaf on NH-48 towards SPR — is experiencing heavy traffic snarls due to the deteriorated road conditions.
Looking Ahead:
The GMDA has committed to addressing these issues with both temporary and permanent repairs to restore the affected roads. As the monsoon season continues, the authority’s focus remains on maintaining road safety and ensuring minimal disruption to the city’s traffic flow.
