Faridabad, 10 July 2024 – A 27-year-old man accused in an attempt-to-murder case was found dead in the lockup at Sector 65 Crime Branch police station in Faridabad on Monday. The deceased, Amit, who was a private employee from Ghazipur in Faridabad, allegedly hanged himself with a blanket.
Amit was taken into custody for an incident related to a case registered at the Faridabad Kotwali police station on July 5. He was placed in a lockup with three other accused on Sunday night. Around 6 am on Monday, police personnel on duty discovered Amit hanging from the ventilator in the lockup. Despite being rushed to BK Hospital in Faridabad, he was declared dead on arrival.
Faridabad police spokesperson Yashpal confirmed the incident, stating, “Following the protocol in custodial deaths under section 196 of BNSS, the sessions judge of Faridabad has appointed Chief Judicial Magistrate Sandeep Yadav to conduct a judicial inquiry.” The body was shifted for autopsy, which was conducted by a board of forensic medicine experts. Both the national and state human rights commissions have been informed about the case.
Amit had been accused of attempting to murder his neighbor Harish Kumar over a debt of Rs 1 lakh. According to the complaint, Amit had taken Harish to The Mall of Faridabad on May 5 under the pretext of repaying the debt but instead attacked him with a knife, inflicting serious injuries. Harish was later taken to Fortis Escorts Hospital by a worker at the mall.
Following Harish’s brother Manjeet Singh’s complaint, the Faridabad Kotwali police registered a case against Amit under several sections of the IPC, including 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 118(1) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 109 (attempt to murder).
Amit and his brother Sumit had visited Police Post Town-2 on July 7 in connection with the case and were subsequently taken to the Sector 65 Crime Branch station. During interrogation, Amit allegedly misled the police and failed to recover the knife used in the attack when taken to Bhakhri village in Faridabad.
The judicial probe led by Chief Judicial Magistrate Sandeep Yadav aims to uncover the circumstances leading to Amit’s death while in custody, ensuring transparency and accountability in the investigation process.
