Gurgaon: The Gurgaon Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is set to introduce electric buses to the city’s fleet by December. To support this initiative, GMDA is constructing a new bus depot in Sector 48 and a power substation at an estimated cost of ₹2.5 crore, expected to be completed in six months.

Infrastructure Developments

  • New Bus Depot: Located in Sector 48, the depot will accommodate 100 buses and cost ₹18 crore. It will feature repair workshops, washing areas, and an office complex. Construction is projected to take one year post-bid issuance.
  • Sector 10 Conversion: The existing depot in Sector 10 is being upgraded to an e-depot, with the substation work set to finish by the end of this month.

E-Bus Fleet Expansion

The central government approved 100 e-buses under the PM e-Sewa scheme last year. In March, GMDA’s request for an additional 100 e-buses was also approved. These efforts aim to bolster the city’s public transport system, currently supported by two bus depots in sectors 10 and 52, servicing 200 buses.

Future Plans

Gurgaon’s mobility plan includes establishing nine city bus depots. Currently, 150 buses operate on 25 routes in the city, with a daily ridership of approximately 90,000, while 50 buses serve Faridabad on 12 routes.

Details of Developments: The GMDA has earmarked 7.5 acres of land in Sector 48 for the new depot, capable of housing 100 buses simultaneously. The detailed project report has been finalized, and administrative approval has been granted. The depot will not only serve as a parking area but will also include facilities for repairs, maintenance, washing, and an office complex.

Officials’ Statements: “We are expecting the first batch of e-buses by the end of this year. While the conversion of the bus depot in Sector 10 into an e-depot is currently underway, we have also started working on providing similar supporting electrical infrastructure in Sector 48 depot. A tender for the power substation has already been floated and one for the construction of the depot will soon be floated,” said RD Singhal, chief general manager of GMDA (mobility).

Timeline and Costs:

  • Power Substation: ₹2.5 crore, to be completed in six months.
  • Sector 48 Depot: ₹18 crore, to be completed in one year after bid issuance.
  • Sector 10 E-Depot: Substation work to be completed by the end of the month.

These developments align with the city’s mobility plan to expand and modernize its public transport infrastructure, ensuring efficient and sustainable urban mobility for Gurgaon’s residents.
