Gurugram, August 29, 2024 — Gurugram, known as the Millennium City and a growing medical hub, is facing a critical situation at its Civil Hospital due to severe maintenance neglect. The hospital building’s PVC shed, designed to allow natural light into the dome-shaped structure, has become dangerously dilapidated, raising concerns about potential accidents, especially during the ongoing rainy season.
The Civil Hospital, located in Sector-10, was relocated from its original site in Civil Lines in 2016 due to the deteriorating condition of the previous building. However, the new facility, which accommodates 200 beds and serves a large number of patients daily, is now itself showing signs of neglect. Among the patients treated here are those with orthopedic issues, pregnant women, and others with various ailments.
Over the past nine years, the PVC sheets on the hospital’s roof have significantly deteriorated, causing water to leak during rains. This leakage not only creates discomfort for patients and healthcare staff but also poses a risk of accidents, especially in critical areas like the emergency department. The water seeps onto the stairs, making the floors slippery and increasing the danger of falls.
Structural Concerns
Upon entering the hospital, visitors and patients are greeted with a leaking roof on the way to the emergency department. The plastic sheet covering the roof has a large hole, allowing rainwater to pour through. Additionally, the plaster on the third-floor ceiling is in a deteriorated state, and the basement walls in wards like the general ward, dengue ward, and Mitrata Clinic are covered in damp patches, indicating severe moisture issues.
Official Response
Dr. Manish Rathi, Deputy Medical Superintendent of the hospital, acknowledged the concerns and stated, “Repairs were carried out before the monsoon, but further repairs to the shed will be undertaken. Measures to address the dampness will also be implemented.”
Impact on Patients and Staff
The current state of the hospital is causing significant distress to both patients and healthcare workers. The leaking roof and damp walls not only create an uncomfortable environment but also pose a risk to patient safety. The hospital’s maintenance issues highlight the urgent need for comprehensive repairs to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone who relies on this critical healthcare facility.
