Guwahati/Dibrugarh, July 3, 2024 — Continuous rainfall since Monday has led to severe landslides and exacerbated the flood situation in North-East India, claiming nine lives and affecting over 11 lakh people. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an “orange warning” for Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland for the next three days starting Wednesday.
Rising Flood Impact in Assam
The number of flood-affected people in Assam has surged to 11.34 lakh across 28 districts on Tuesday, up from 6.44 lakh in 19 districts on Monday. Since May, the flood-related death toll in Assam has risen to 38. The devastating floods have inundated almost the entire Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, except for certain locations in Panbari Reserve Forest, and nearly 80% of Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. In Kaziranga, four hog deer have drowned, and other animals have been forced to move to higher ground.
Tragic Loss of Lives
In Assam, two people drowned in Tinsukia, while another was swept away in Dhemaji. In Cachar, a 28-year-old man and his six-month-old son lost their lives when a mud wall of their house collapsed. In Mizoram, a couple and their four-year-old daughter were killed in a landslide on the outskirts of Aizawl. In Nagaland’s Kusong village, a 35-year-old man was swept away by the strong currents of the Nguhaiu river in Noklak on Monday, with locals retrieving his body at midnight.
IMD’s Forecast and Response
The IMD has predicted that the situation may improve from Wednesday with a decline in rainfall intensity. However, the orange warning indicates that residents should remain alert and prepared for adverse weather conditions.
Relief and Rescue Efforts
Local authorities and disaster response teams are working tirelessly to provide relief and conduct rescue operations in the affected regions. Efforts are focused on evacuating residents from high-risk areas, providing medical aid, and ensuring the safety of wildlife in national parks.
Community and Government Support
The central and state governments are coordinating to ensure timely assistance and resources reach the affected areas. Community support and volunteer efforts are also playing a crucial role in providing relief to those impacted by the floods and landslides.
Conclusion
The relentless rainfall and subsequent natural disasters in North-East India underscore the urgent need for effective disaster management and preparedness. As the region grapples with the aftermath, the collective efforts of authorities, communities, and individuals are crucial in mitigating the impact and aiding recovery.
