New Delhi – In a significant ruling, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed X Corp and Google Inc to take down social media posts that are deemed prima facie defamatory against Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) officer Anjali Birla, who is also the daughter of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Justice Navin Chawla, presiding over the case, issued an order restraining unknown parties from directly or indirectly posting, circulating, communicating, tweeting, or retweeting the alleged defamatory content specified by Anjali Birla in her defamation suit.

Swift Action Ordered

The High Court mandated that the social media posts be removed by the intermediaries within 24 hours. Should the complainant discover any other similar posts, she is to notify X Corp and Google immediately for further action. Notices have also been issued to X Corp, Google, the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and unknown parties involved in the suit, requiring them to respond within four weeks.

Allegations of Influence

Anjali Birla’s counsel presented that she had appeared for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Central Services Exam (CSE) and was selected in the consolidated reserve list of 2019, joining the Indian Railways as an IRPS officer. The defamatory posts allege that her success in the UPSC exam was due to her father’s influence, a claim she vehemently denies.

Upholding Dignity

This case underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the dignity and reputation of individuals, particularly public servants, against baseless and defamatory accusations on social media platforms.
