Bengaluru, June 26, 2024 — In a significant development in the case against Prajwal Revanna, a former Member of Parliament, a special court in Bengaluru has denied his bail petition. The decision follows the addition of rape charges under Indian Penal Code Section 376 to his case.
Court Hearing and Prosecution’s Argument
During the hearing on Wednesday, the special public prosecutor informed the special court for public representatives that the charges of rape had been officially added. The prosecutor emphasized the severity of the crime, arguing that granting bail would not be appropriate given the gravity of the allegations.
Background and Allegations
Prajwal Revanna, 33, grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and nephew of former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, faces multiple allegations of sexual assault. Suspended by his party, Janata Dal Secular (JDS), he is currently in the custody of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the charges.
The controversy began on April 23, when videos allegedly showing Revanna sexually assaulting multiple women surfaced, just days before the polling in the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency where he was a candidate. Amid the escalating scandal, Revanna left for Germany on April 27, a day after voting.
Return and Arrest
Despite a Blue Corner notice issued to locate him and public appeals from his grandfather and uncle, Revanna remained out of reach until he returned to India and was arrested on May 31. He subsequently lost the election in Hassan by over 40,000 votes, with results declared on June 4.
Family Involvement and Additional Arrests
The scandal has further embroiled Revanna’s family. His brother, Suraj Revanna, a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council, is also in custody for allegedly sexually assaulting a man. The SIT continues to investigate the allegations against both brothers.
Political and Public Reactions
The accusations and subsequent arrests have sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Karnataka, with many calling for stringent actions and thorough investigations. The Janata Dal Secular party has distanced itself from the Revanna brothers, highlighting their commitment to justice and rule of law.
