Guwahati, India – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced significant new policies and legislative plans, including a stringent law against ‘love jihad’ and a new domicile policy. Speaking at a BJP meeting, Sarma revealed that his government will soon introduce a law with provisions for life imprisonment for those found guilty of ‘love jihad.’
“We spoke about ‘love jihad’ during the elections. Soon, we will bring a law, which will award life imprisonment in such cases,” Sarma stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing the issue.
Sarma, who is the BJP’s most prominent leader in the North East, also announced the introduction of a new domicile policy. Under this policy, only individuals born in Assam will be eligible for government jobs in the state. He highlighted that his government has prioritized indigenous people in the one lakh government jobs provided, fulfilling his pre-poll promise.
The Chief Minister further elaborated on a new decision regarding land transactions between Hindus and Muslims. He said that while the government cannot prevent such transactions, it will now require the consent of the Chief Minister for approval. This measure is intended to ensure transparency and fairness in land deals.
Sarma reiterated his promise to bring the uniform civil code to Assam and addressed concerns over demographic changes in the region. Last month, during a visit to Jharkhand, he claimed that ‘Bangladeshi infiltrators’ were grabbing tribal land, which he sees as a broader demographic issue affecting Assam, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
“I have observed the demographic invasion in Assam, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. Whenever the 2021 census is conducted, I am sure it will reveal shocking news about the demography of Eastern India. The demographic invasion is real, and due to appeasement policies, we are unable to control it,” Sarma stated.
The Chief Minister’s comments and policy announcements have sparked significant debate and reactions across political and social spectra. TMC president Subrata Bakshi has asked for an apology from the minister regarding another recent controversy involving threats to a woman officer.
