Gurugram, India – July 6, 2024:
In a significant move to ease traffic congestion and reclaim public land, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has successfully cleared approximately 80 acres of encroached land along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR). This extensive four-day anti-encroachment drive concluded on Thursday, targeting unauthorized structures that had been causing major obstructions.
Details of the Anti-Encroachment Drive
The enforcement wing of GMDA, led by District Town Planner RS Bhath, removed around 100 hutments, 44 shops, and 12 nurseries that were illegally operating along the SPR. These unauthorized constructions were primarily located near roundabouts and junctions, significantly contributing to traffic congestion in the area.
Bhath explained that despite multiple warnings, many violators did not remove their encroachments voluntarily, necessitating forcible eviction. The drive aimed to ensure smoother traffic flow and reclaim the green belt areas.
Temporary Shelter Considerations
To mitigate the impact on vulnerable groups, two hutments were temporarily allowed to remain standing, providing shelter for children and senior citizens during the rains. Occupants of these structures have been informed that they must make alternative arrangements, as these hutments will be removed within the next two days.
Future Enforcement and Precautions
GMDA has instructed its staff to regularly monitor the cleared areas to prevent re-encroachment. Violators found reoccupying the green belts will face strict legal action, including FIRs. On the same day, the enforcement wing also demolished four boundary walls and two unauthorized structures over three acres in Sakatpur village.
During the demolition drive, an appeal was made to the public, urging them to seek prior permission from GMDA before commencing any construction on agricultural land within the authority’s jurisdiction.
Conclusion
The successful clearance of 80 acres of encroached land along the Southern Peripheral Road marks a significant step towards improving traffic conditions and reclaiming public spaces in Gurugram. GMDA’s ongoing efforts to monitor and prevent re-encroachment are crucial for maintaining the integrity of these areas.
