New Delhi, India – July 6, 2024:
In a recent legal development, the Delhi High Court has directed a woman to delete a social media post on X (formerly Twitter) alleging the presence of a centipede in Amul ice cream. The court’s order comes after the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited, which markets Amul products, sought legal intervention to remove the post and prevent further dissemination of similar content.
Court’s Directive
The High Court issued an ex-parte order, noting the absence of the defendants in the proceedings. Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora instructed the removal of the contentious post from the defendant Deepa Devi’s X account (@Deepadi11) within three days. The court also restrained Devi and others from posting identical or similar content on any social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, until further notice.
Amul’s Quality Assurance
Senior counsel Sunil Dalal, representing the plaintiff federation, highlighted the stringent quality control measures employed by Amul at every stage of production. He emphasized that from the procurement of raw milk to the manufacturing and packaging of ice cream, rigorous quality checks ensure that no physical, bacterial, or chemical contamination occurs. These processes comply with the standards set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
Response from Defendants
The court noted that despite attempts by Amul’s representatives to investigate the matter and verify the claims, the defendants refused to provide the ice cream tub in question for testing. The defendants also did not appear in court despite being served with summons.
Legal Proceedings
The case is scheduled for further hearing on July 22. The court’s interim order aims to prevent the spread of potentially defamatory content against Amul while the matter is being resolved.
