Delhi experienced another overcast and humid day on Friday, with parts of the city receiving light showers. The weather conditions provided temporary relief from the heat but maintained the city’s humid atmosphere.

The maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 33.2 degrees Celsius, which is three degrees above normal. This was a slight increase from Thursday’s maximum of 31.7 degrees Celsius. Despite the humidity, a light breeze throughout the day helped keep the air quality in the “satisfactory” category for the second consecutive day.
Rainfall and Air Quality
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), isolated spells of light rain are expected over the weekend, with similar overcast conditions likely to continue. On Friday, Delhi’s 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) was 77, categorized as “satisfactory.” This followed Thursday’s AQI of 61, the lowest recorded in the last 297 days.
Rainfall Data
The Safdarjung weather station, representative of Delhi’s weather, recorded 0.6mm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading to 8:30 am on Friday. Other areas like Lodhi Road and the Ridge also recorded light rain. The IMD has forecasted that similar light spells of rain are expected over the next few days, with the maximum temperature likely to hover around 33 to 34 degrees Celsius.
Monsoon and Rainfall Trends
Mahesh Palawat, vice-president at Skymet meteorology, mentioned that the monsoon trough is gradually moving away from Delhi, indicating that only patchy showers are likely across the National Capital Region. There is no expectation of any intense spell of rain in Delhi for at least a week.
As of Friday evening, Delhi had recorded 10.4mm of rainfall for July. The normal monthly rainfall for July in Delhi is 209.7mm. Last year, the city recorded 384.6mm of rainfall in July. June 2024 ended with an excess rainfall of 228%, marking the highest for June since 1936, with a majority of the rain falling on June 28.
