New Delhi, July 3, 2024 — Ola’s founder and managing director, Bhavish Aggarwal, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to hiring women at all levels, following backlash against Apple’s supplier Foxconn for discriminatory hiring practices. Ola aims to boost female representation in its workforce, from junior positions to senior management, and has launched the all-women Ola Futurefactory.

Ola’s Stance on Hiring Women

In a recent media briefing, Aggarwal addressed reports of Foxconn’s hiring practices, emphasizing that Ola has no policies against hiring married women. “Women are more disciplined and dexterous. We will continue to hire women workforce within our facilities. We have no policies like Foxconn to not hire married women. The women workforce in India is low, and we are doing our part to solve this. While we right now hire for junior-level, we are also trying to hire more women employees for senior management as well,” Aggarwal stated.

Ola Futurefactory: A Milestone for Gender Equality

Earlier, in an Ola Electric blog post, Aggarwal announced the launch of Ola Futurefactory, which will be run entirely by women. “Today, I am proud to announce that Ola Futurefactory will be run entirely by women. We welcomed the first batch this week, and at full capacity, Futurefactory will employ over 10,000 women, making it the world’s largest women-only factory and the only all-women automotive manufacturing facility globally,” he wrote. The company also shared a short video on YouTube highlighting the stories of its women workers.

Foxconn’s Hiring Policy Allegations

A recent investigative report exposed Foxconn, Apple’s largest supplier, for rejecting married women at its iPhone factory in India. The report alleged that Foxconn systematically excluded married women from job opportunities at its main iPhone assembly factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. According to the report, the contract manufacturer believes that married women have “more family responsibilities” and “issues post marriage,” making them less desirable employees. This discriminatory practice has raised significant concerns about gender equality in the tech manufacturing industry.

Ola’s Commitment to Gender Equality

Ola’s proactive stance and initiatives highlight its commitment to gender equality and its efforts to create a more inclusive workforce. By establishing the all-women Ola Futurefactory and promoting female representation across all levels, Ola sets a positive example for other companies in the tech and manufacturing sectors.

Conclusion

As Ola continues to push for greater female participation in its workforce, the company’s actions stand in stark contrast to the allegations against Foxconn. Ola’s commitment to hiring women, including married women, underscores the importance of gender equality and inclusivity in the workplace.
