New Delhi, July 3, 2024 — Opposition members in the Lok Sabha declared a moral victory for the INDIA bloc in the recent elections, asserting that it marked the end of communal politics and diminished the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They also accused the government of relying on its allies to maintain power.

Key Opposition Criticisms

Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav criticized the government on several issues, including unemployment, the NEET exams, the Agniveer scheme, and infrastructure deficiencies. He raised doubts about the authenticity of electronic voting machines (EVMs), stating, “I did not trust EVMs yesterday, I don’t trust them today. And even if I win all 80 seats (in Uttar Pradesh), I will not trust EVMs.” Yadav emphasized that the issue of EVMs remains alive for the Samajwadi Party and vowed to continue opposing their use.

Debate on President’s Address

During the debate on the motion of thanks to the President’s address, TMC member Kalyan Banerjee accused the PM of needing support from Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) to govern effectively. Banerjee suggested that the recent elections had brought about a change, resulting in “an unstable government and a strong opposition.” He added, “Earlier, our PM had so much confidence in himself, but not any longer.”

Banerjee criticized what he described as the PM’s arrogance and vindictiveness, claiming these traits had led to a decline in Modi’s popularity. “If you are arrogant, we do not mind. Today, the time has come to oversee yourself. This arrogance, this hatred and this vindictiveness has downgraded the popularity of Narendra Modi,” he said.

End of Communal Politics

Akhilesh Yadav declared June 4, the day the Lok Sabha election results were announced, as a day of independence from communal politics for India. “In this election, communal politics has lost forever… This election is a new era of positive politics, pro-Constitution people have won, the Constitution has won… It is the end of top-down politics,” he said.

Yadav highlighted BJP’s defeat in Uttar Pradesh’s Faizabad constituency, which includes Ayodhya, interpreting it as a divine signal. “Hoi wahi jo Ram rachi rakha (whatever Ram has planned will happen)… The victory of Ayodhya is the victory of the wisdom of India’s voters,” he remarked.

Conclusion

The opposition’s strong statements in the Lok Sabha reflect growing confidence and a sense of achievement following the recent elections. Their claims of a moral victory and criticisms of the government’s reliance on allies and perceived arrogance underscore the evolving political landscape in India.
