Gurgaon, July 2, 2024 — With the onset of the monsoon season bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and unstable soil conditions, the Gurgaon Forest Department has announced a suspension of tree-felling activities from July 1 for the next two months. Instead, the department will focus on extensive plantation drives to enhance the city’s green cover and ecological balance.
Shift in Focus to Plantation Drives
The decision to halt tree-felling operations is driven by the hazardous conditions posed by the monsoon, which can make such activities dangerous. Additionally, the monsoon season spurs tree growth, making it an inopportune time for felling. The department aims to prioritize plantation activities, which require significant time, effort, and resources.
“Firstly, the staff cannot effectively manage tree-felling requests alongside the planned plantation drives. The plantation activities require significant time, effort, and resources. Secondly, it is not advisable to cut or trim trees during the rainy season due to the increased risk of accidents and injuries to the staff and public,” said a forest official.
Enhancing Green Cover and Ecological Balance
Gurgaon’s protected forest area is just 1,600 hectares, representing only 2% of the city’s total area. Over the years, development has significantly impacted the city’s green cover. The forest department’s focus on plantation drives during the monsoon aims to counter this trend by enhancing the green cover, improving ecological balance, and contributing to the region’s overall well-being.
The department has planned various initiatives, including sapling distribution, tree planting ceremonies, and awareness campaigns to engage the community and promote environmental stewardship.
Importance of Trees During the Monsoon
Ecologist and wildlife researcher Sunil Harsana highlighted the crucial role trees play during the monsoon. “Trees play a crucial role in the water cycle by collecting moisture and facilitating its percolation through their roots. This process not only nourishes the trees themselves but also helps in preventing floods by regulating the flow of water,” Harsana explained.
He added that the rainy season is a period of flourishing biodiversity. “During the rainy season, there is a noticeable surge in insect populations. Simultaneously, many bird species take advantage of this time to raise their young. Reptiles, seeking to avoid the damp ground, find refuge by climbing trees. In essence, the rainy season is a time when the entire biodiversity flourishes.”
Community Involvement and Future Plans
The forest department’s initiatives over the next two months will involve active community participation to ensure the success of the plantation drives. By distributing saplings and organizing planting ceremonies, the department hopes to foster a sense of environmental responsibility among residents.
This strategic shift in focus is expected to not only improve Gurgaon’s green cover but also raise awareness about the importance of preserving and enhancing the city’s natural environment.
