Gurgaon, July 2, 2024 — Residents of Sector 38 in Gurgaon continue to endure severe water scarcity due to persistent delays in activating the new pipeline connection. Despite repeated assurances from the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), issues such as motor installation delays and pending gas pipeline excavation permissions have hindered progress in resolving the ongoing crisis.
Prolonged Water Scarcity
The new water pipeline, installed seven months ago, has yet to be connected, leaving approximately 200 families, particularly those living in higher elevation areas, without an adequate water supply. Initially laid down in 1998, the infrastructure in Sector 38 has struggled to meet the increasing demand due to rising Floor Area Ratio (FAR) and population growth. Every summer, residents face significant water shortages.
In March 2022, the Gurgaon Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) sanctioned an additional water connection for the sector. However, despite the installation of the new pipeline a year later, it remains disconnected from the master pipeline in Sector 47.
Residents’ Struggles and Complaints
LD Arora, a resident, expressed the community’s frustration: “We go without water supply for days at a time and have to rely on private tankers. We have been getting false assurances from MCG but no relief has been provided so far. We urge the civic body to expedite the process and relieve us from facing this perpetual crisis.”
Moreover, the new boosting station, designed to improve water supply to the sector, lacks installed motors, further exacerbating the shortage. Despite numerous complaints, the MCG has not provided a definitive timeline for when the connection will be completed.
Sajesh Gulia, the president of the Residents Welfare Association (RWA), highlighted the unmet promises made before the Lok Sabha elections this year: “We were assured that our civic grievances would be resolved by May 20, but June is over and we have not received the water connection to date. We have been dealing with a severe shortage every summer and MCG has turned a blind eye.”
Official Response and Future Steps
Sanjeev Kumar, MCG’s executive engineer, addressed the delay, stating, “There is a gas pipeline in the area, and we have sought necessary permission for excavation work. We hope to receive the approval this week.”
As the residents of Sector 38 await the completion of the new water connection, the urgency of resolving the water scarcity issue grows. The community calls for immediate action from the MCG to expedite the process and provide a stable water supply, especially during the peak summer months.
