Imphal: In response to the ongoing violence in Manipur, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will preside over a crucial meeting today at 4 PM to review the security situation in the state. This marks the first high-level meeting by the central government since the re-election of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this month.

Senior officials from the Centre, state government, including Chief Minister N Biren Singh, the army, and other security forces are expected to attend the meeting. This development comes amid continued unrest and violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities, which has resulted in at least 225 deaths and displaced around 50,000 people, many of whom are still living in relief centers.

Recent Incidents and Rising Tensions

Manipur has witnessed fresh outbreaks of violence in the past few weeks. A school building near Moreh was set ablaze, and the beheaded body of a missing person was discovered, adding to the tension in the region. Last week, armed militants ambushed the convoy of Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s advanced security team in Kangpokpi district, injuring a civilian driver and a security officer.

Calls for Peace

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Dr. Mohan Bhagwat highlighted the urgency of addressing the situation in Manipur, emphasizing the need to prioritize peace over election rhetoric. RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale described the ongoing violence as “painful” and “worrisome,” urging for mutual dialogue and brotherhood to resolve the conflict.

Previous Efforts

Last month, Amit Shah visited Manipur and held nine peace meetings with representatives from both the Meitei and Kuki communities. Despite these efforts, the violence has persisted, necessitating today’s high-level review meeting.

Expectations from the Meeting

The meeting aims to evaluate the current security measures and formulate strategies to restore peace and stability in the region. The central government’s involvement is seen as a significant step towards addressing the complex and deep-rooted issues fueling the conflict.

The Sarhind Times will provide updates on the outcomes of this crucial meeting and other developments related to the situation in Manipur.
