New Delhi, India: In a significant move aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring that development reaches every corner of Ladakh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory on Monday. The new districts—Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—will join the existing districts of Leh and Kargil.
Previously, the Union Territory of Ladakh consisted of just two districts: Leh, which had six sub-divisions, and Kargil, which had four. The addition of these five new districts is expected to bring the administration closer to the people, allowing for more effective delivery of government services and initiatives.
“In pursuit of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny,” Amit Shah announced on X (formerly Twitter).
The creation of these new districts is a part of the central government’s ongoing efforts to ensure that the Union Territory of Ladakh receives focused attention in terms of development, infrastructure, and governance. The move is expected to address the unique geographical and administrative challenges faced by the region, which is known for its remote and difficult terrain.
The announcement was met with widespread approval from local leaders and the public, who have long demanded better administrative divisions to improve governance and service delivery. The five new districts will enable the government to better manage resources, implement development projects more efficiently, and cater to the needs of the local population.
Amit Shah further stated, “The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh.” The government has been making concerted efforts to ensure that Ladakh’s potential is fully realized, with investments in infrastructure, tourism, and social welfare programs.
This decision marks a significant step forward in the administration’s efforts to bring development closer to the people of Ladakh, reinforcing the government’s commitment to the region’s prosperity and growth.
