Kolkata – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its investigation into the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. On Tuesday, the CBI summoned Kolkata Police’s Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Anup Dutta, following the discovery of a suspicious call made by the accused, Sanjay Roy, to Dutta on August 9—the same day the victim’s body was found.
Sources within the investigation have revealed that Roy, who is under arrest for the heinous crime, contacted ASI Dutta on the day of the incident, raising questions about Dutta’s possible involvement in the case. The CBI is currently exploring whether Dutta played any role in helping Roy destroy evidence or escape. The agency is also investigating whether Dutta was aware of the crime prior to the discovery of the victim’s body.
The case took a political turn on Wednesday when Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar publicly questioned Dutta’s close relationship with Sanjay Roy. Majumdar shared photos on social media showing Dutta and Roy together at a gathering allegedly organized by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in South Dinajpur. “Not just a champion in running, but also in party connections! Engaged in a gathering with TMC leaders of South Dinajpur are none other than Kolkata Police’s notable ASI Anup Dutta, alongside Civic Volunteer Sanjay!” Majumdar wrote on X.
Majumdar further raised concerns about the safety and dignity of women in West Bengal, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in light of the case.
According to insider sources, ASI Dutta allegedly arranged for a bed for Sanjay Roy at the 4th Battalion Barrack, in clear violation of protocol. He is also reported to have assisted Roy in procuring a motorbike for daily travel.
The CBI’s investigation has shed light on Roy’s dubious role within Kolkata Police. Initially joining the force’s disaster management group as a volunteer in 2019, Roy was later transferred to the police welfare cell and subsequently to the outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Despite not being a regular police officer, Roy often portrayed himself as one, donning Kolkata Police (KP) attire and using a bike with a KP tag. Many colleagues mistakenly believed him to be a legitimate officer due to his frequent presence and actions within police premises.
The CBI is now piecing together the events leading up to the crime and scrutinizing the extent of Dutta’s involvement, if any, in the horrific case. The investigation continues as both the central agency and the public await further revelations.
