New Delhi, Aug 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a historic diplomatic visit to Ukraine and Poland this week, marking a significant moment in India’s international relations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Monday that this visit will be the first by an Indian prime minister to Ukraine in over 30 years.

According to Secretary West, MEA, Tanmaya Lal, “PM Narendra Modi will undertake an official visit to Ukraine on Friday, August 23, at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.” This visit is not only a milestone in India-Ukraine relations but also carries substantial geopolitical weight, as it will be the first time an Indian leader has visited Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022.

“This visit will build upon the recent high-level interactions between the leaders,” Lal said. He emphasized that India has consistently advocated for diplomacy and dialogue as the means to resolve the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, reiterating India’s commitment to contributing to peaceful solutions.

Prime Minister Modi’s discussions with President Zelenskyy in Kyiv are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring multilateral cooperation. The Ukrainian presidency confirmed that the visit would include the signing of several key agreements.

Following his Ukraine visit, PM Modi will proceed to Poland on August 21-22. This visit, the first by an Indian prime minister to Poland in 45 years, will see Modi engaging in bilateral talks with Polish President Andrzej Sebastian Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The Prime Minister will also meet with the Indian community in Poland, further solidifying ties between the two nations.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated, “Prime Minister will be accorded a ceremonial welcome in Warsaw. He will call on President H.E. Mr. Andrzej Sebastian Duda and will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Donald Tusk.”
