AIMPLB Rejects Uniform Civil Code, Defends Sharia Law as Non-Negotiable

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) announced on Saturday that it firmly opposes the implementation of a uniform or secular civil code, stating that Muslims in India will not compromise on Sharia law. The AIMPLB issued a press release condemning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for a uniform civil code, made during his Independence Day speech, and criticized the portrayal of religious personal laws as “communal.”

The AIMPLB spokesperson, Dr. SQR Ilyas, expressed shock at the Prime Minister’s remarks, emphasizing that Muslims in India have the constitutional right to practice their religion and follow laws derived from Sharia. He referenced the Shariat Application Act of 1937 and Article 25 of the Constitution, which guarantees citizens the right to profess, propagate, and practice their religion.

Dr. Ilyas argued that the separation from religious laws, as seen in western countries, is not suitable for India’s diverse society. He also criticized the Prime Minister’s use of the term “secular civil code” instead of the constitutional term “uniform civil code,” accusing the government of targeting Sharia law while ignoring the broader implications on various social groups in the country.

The AIMPLB called on citizens to remember the sacrifices and ideals of India’s freedom fighters and urged them not to be swayed by religious polarization.
