Gurgaon witnessed moderate morning showers followed by a sunny day on Tuesday, bringing relief after two days of intense rainfall. The city recorded 23.7 mm of rain by 5:30 pm, leading to temporary waterlogging and traffic snarls during the morning peak hours.

Weather Update:

The maximum temperature in Gurgaon saw an increase of 3.1 degrees Celsius over the past 24 hours, rising from 29.6 degrees Celsius on Monday to 32.7 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which is still 1.5 degrees below the normal level. However, the night temperature dropped to 24.5 degrees Celsius, 1.8 degrees below normal, compared to Monday’s 26 degrees Celsius.

The rain continued until around 8:30 am on Tuesday, after which the sun shone brightly throughout the day. Some isolated light rain was observed in a few areas around 5 pm.

Impact on Daily Life:

The morning showers caused waterlogging and traffic jams at several key locations, including Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Subhash Chowk, and Udyog Vihar. Commuters faced difficulties, especially while traveling from the Central Peripheral Road (CPR) towards Delhi.

Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Sector 86, shared his experience: “The rain was much needed, but the sudden downpour caused some inconvenience. The entire sector is still grappling with waterlogging, and the market road has developed several potholes. Commuting during the morning was very difficult due to heavy jams at major junctions.”

IMD’s Forecast:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Gurgaon and south Haryana are likely to experience scattered to fairly widespread rain this week. Heavy rainfall is expected in isolated areas between August 13 and 16. According to Surender Paul, IMD Director (Chandigarh), “Moderate rainfall is likely over the next seven days in south Haryana, including Gurgaon, as the monsoon trough is currently active. Gurgaon is also likely to witness heavy rain in isolated areas.”

The IMD has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for light to moderate rain from Wednesday to Friday, warning of potential traffic disruptions, an increased risk of vehicle accidents, and water accumulation in low-lying areas and on roads.

Air Quality Update:

The city’s average air quality index (AQI) deteriorated to the ‘moderate’ category on Tuesday, rising to 101 from the ‘satisfactory’ level of 89 recorded the previous day.

Delhi Weather Report:

Parts of Delhi also experienced light to moderate rain on Tuesday, with Safdarjung, the city’s base station, recording 12.2 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. Other areas such as Delhi University, Ridge in north Delhi, Lodhi Road, Ayanagar, and Pitampura also reported varying amounts of rainfall.

The maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 33.6 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal, while the minimum temperature was 25 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. Relative humidity ranged between 76% and 100%.

Looking Ahead:

With rain likely on Independence Day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the national flag at Delhi’s Red Fort, residents of Gurgaon and Delhi are advised to prepare for potential weather-related disruptions.
