Gurugram, Haryana: In a significant move to uphold the integrity of the police force, a Gurugram police constable and a special police officer (SPO) have been dismissed from service after being found guilty of bribery in a departmental inquiry. The incident, which took place in July 2023, involved Constable Suresh Kumar and SPO Sher Singh, who were caught accepting a bribe from a cab driver.
The case came to light when a cab driver discreetly recorded a seven-minute video showing Constable Kumar demanding a bribe of ₹2,000, eventually settling for ₹1,000, after threatening the driver with a potential ₹15,000 fine for alleged traffic violations. The video, which captured the constable sitting in the cab and making the demands, led to swift action by the authorities.
Following the incident, the cab driver filed a complaint with a senior police officer, prompting an immediate response. Gurugram Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora suspended both Kumar and Singh, and an FIR under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against them at the Civil Lines police station.
While SPO Sher Singh was dismissed from his job soon after the incident, Constable Suresh Kumar was placed under suspension pending a departmental inquiry. The inquiry has now concluded, finding Kumar guilty of the charges, leading to his dismissal from service.
The dismissal of the two officers serves as a stern reminder of the zero-tolerance policy towards corruption within the police force. “We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and will take strict action against any officer found engaging in corrupt practices,” said a senior police official.
The case has been a topic of discussion in the city, highlighting the importance of accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies.
