The Lok Sabha on Friday passed the Indian Aircraft Bill, 2024, replacing the 90-year-old Aircraft Act of 1934, in a significant move that is expected to streamline and modernize the aviation sector in India. The bill, which covers the design, manufacture, maintenance, operation, and sale of aircraft, was approved by voice vote despite opposition amendments being rejected.

The passage of the bill marks a critical step towards removing existing inconsistencies in aviation laws and is seen as a major boost for the industry. Civil Aviation Minister K. Ramamohan Naidu, who addressed the House during the discussion, emphasized the need for a new legal framework, highlighting that the 1934 Act had become outdated due to numerous amendments.

Naidu pointed out that the older legislation had resulted in ambiguities and contradictions, particularly concerning the powers and functions of internal bodies like the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The new bill aims to resolve these issues, thereby reducing confusion within the sector and promoting growth.

One of the key features of the new law is the government’s plan to launch an online grievance redressal system, which will ensure that passengers are not exploited through unnecessary fare hikes. This system is part of a broader effort to enhance consumer protection within the aviation industry.

The Indian Aircraft Bill, 2024, is expected to make the business environment in the aviation sector more efficient, providing clarity and fostering innovation in line with global standards.
