Patna, India – Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president Chirag Paswan has expressed his strong disagreement with the Supreme Court’s observation regarding the implementation of the “creamy layer” concept among Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). In a significant political move, Paswan announced that his party would file a review petition against the ruling.

Chirag Paswan, elected from his late father Ram Vilas Paswan’s home constituency of Hajipur in the Lok Sabha polls, draws significant support from the Dalit community. According to the recent Bihar caste survey, SC and ST together comprise 21.3% of the state’s total population, underscoring their political importance.

Addressing the media in Patna, Paswan stated, “We disagree with the Supreme Court’s observation and have registered it prominently. We are clear that the basis of classification of the Scheduled Caste is untouchability, not educational or economic status. So, there can’t be a provision for creamy layer…reservation within reservation is not fair.” He emphasized that his party would soon file a review petition in the Supreme Court to challenge the ruling.

Paswan’s stance is rooted in the belief that the concept of “creamy layer” undermines the fundamental basis for granting reservations to SCs and STs, which is to address historical injustices and social discrimination based on untouchability.

This announcement comes at a critical time as the political landscape in Bihar continues to evolve, with caste dynamics playing a crucial role in shaping electoral outcomes.
