New Delhi, India – A 61-year-old retired Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officer and his wife were brutally attacked with a knife while resisting a robbery in their home in Vasant Kunj in the early hours of Saturday. The victims, Abhay Kumar Singh and his wife Anupama, were injured during the incident. Police have arrested two men, including the alleged robber.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Rohit Meena, the suspects have been identified as Jitender Kumar alias Jitu, a native of Meerut, who committed the robbery, and his associate Arun Kumar, who received the stolen property. Both suspects are residents of Palam Village.

The incident occurred around 1:15 AM when the police control room received a call regarding a burglary and injury to two people. Upon arriving at the scene in Vasant Kunj’s D-Block, police found Singh and his wife injured. Singh recounted the events in his first information report (FIR), stating that he woke up after hearing a noise coming from the balcony adjacent to their bedroom. He saw a man entering their room through the sliding door and began shouting to wake his wife. The intruder, brandishing a large knife, threatened to kill them if they raised an alarm.

“He attacked me with the knife, injuring my head and hands as I tried to snatch the knife. My wife was shouting for help, and he attacked her too,” Singh detailed in the FIR. The commotion alerted their son, who lived on the first floor, and their domestic help, both of whom rushed to their aid. Together, they managed to lock the intruder in the room, but he escaped through the balcony, taking a duffle bag containing several items, including a silver article.

The injured couple was taken to AIIMS for treatment. The police registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and launched an investigation. Forensic teams collected vital evidence, including chance prints and CCTV footage, which helped identify the suspect within hours. Jitender Kumar was arrested less than 12 hours after the crime, and the knife used in the attack was recovered. During interrogation, Jitender revealed that he had given the stolen bag to Arun Kumar for disposal, leading to Arun’s arrest.

Police said that Jitender is involved in at least 13 cases of burglary, robbery, and theft reported from across south, southeast, and southwest Delhi, and Haryana. His involvement in similar crimes in Uttar Pradesh and other states is being verified.
