New Delhi, July 26, 2024 – In a dramatic turn of events during the NEET-UG hearing on Tuesday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud ordered security personnel to remove senior advocate Mathews Nedumpara from the Supreme Court courtroom. This incident follows a series of heated exchanges between the CJI and Nedumpara, highlighting ongoing tensions.

Courtroom Tensions: The incident occurred when senior advocate Mathews Nedumpara interrupted another lawyer, senior advocate Narendra Hooda, who was representing a petitioner in the NEET-UG case. Justice Chandrachud advised Nedumpara to wait until Hooda completed his argument. However, Nedumpara persisted, claiming his seniority in the courtroom.

CJI’s Response: Miffed with the lawyer’s behavior, the CJI warned Nedumpara against playing to the gallery and reminded him of the court’s procedures. “Call the security… have him removed,” said the CJI. In response, Nedumpara asserted that he did not need to be told to leave and exited the courtroom voluntarily. The CJI emphasized, “I have seen the judiciary for the last 24 years. I cannot let lawyers dictate procedure in this court.”

Past Incidents: This was not the first heated exchange between CJI Chandrachud and Nedumpara. In March, the CJI admonished the advocate for shouting in court, stating, “Don’t shout at me! This is not a Hyde Park corner meeting, you are in the court. If you want to move an application, file an application.”

Judiciary Dynamics: The repeated confrontations between the CJI and Nedumpara underscore the challenges faced by the judiciary in maintaining decorum and upholding procedural integrity in the court. The incident has sparked discussions among legal professionals and the public about courtroom conduct and judicial authority.
