New Delhi, July 26, 2024 – A day after a civil service aspirant died from electrocution in Patel Nagar, Delhi minister Atishi has written to Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, directing him to initiate an inquiry into the matter and suggest actions against those responsible.
Minister’s Directive: In her letter, Atishi emphasized the need to ascertain the cause of death and fix responsibility. “A young precious life has been lost due to the negligence and apathy of government officials. The cause of death needs to be ascertained and responsibility needs to be fixed in order to give a clear message that such instances will not be tolerated,” she wrote.
She also directed the senior officer to suggest actions to be taken against those responsible for this “tragic loss” and submit the report by July 26. Additionally, Atishi called for a proposal for ex-gratia relief for the grieving family members.
Incident Details: The incident occurred on Monday when 26-year-old Nilesh Rai was electrocuted upon coming into contact with an iron gate during heavy rain in Patel Nagar, central Delhi. Police reported that Rai might have slipped on the waterlogged street and grabbed the gate for support, getting electrocuted due to an exposed motor wire.
Rai, an aspirant for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), died just 50 meters from his paying guest accommodation. The incident happened around 2.40 pm, and an FIR has been lodged. Rai is survived by his two sisters and parents, who live in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Narender Rai, is an advocate, and his mother, Neelam Rai, is a primary school teacher. Rai completed his engineering from Bengaluru but later decided to become an IAS officer.
Community Reaction: Rai’s landlord, Atul Dua, recounted that his wife called him at 2 pm, informing him that a man was stuck to the gate. Dua used a scooter and plastic pipes to rescue Rai, but tragically, the effort was in vain.
Official Response: Minister Atishi’s letter underscores the urgency of addressing such negligence and preventing similar incidents in the future. The call for accountability and immediate action highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety.
