Gurugram – The residents of DLF Phase 1, led by the Qutub Enclave Residents Welfare Association (QERWA), have voiced strong opposition to the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran’s (HSVP) decision to grant permission for setting up a liquor shop and permit room in the green belt adjoining Khushboo Chowk on the Gurugram-Faridabad Road. The residents fear that the proposed establishment will disrupt the peace and tranquility of their residential area and harm the environment.
Community Concerns
Baljeet Singh Rathi, president of QERWA, emphasized the negative impact the proposed liquor shop would have on the community. “The proposed liquor shop near the residential area of DLF Phase 1 will completely destroy the peace and tranquility of people living in the area,” he stated. The residents, who had successfully opposed a similar proposal a few years ago, are determined to take action again if necessary.
Impact on Environment and Community
The RWA members highlighted that over 5,000 families reside in DLF Phase 1, with additional group housing societies and residential areas in close proximity to the proposed site. They expressed concerns about potential disorderly behavior, littering, and unsanitary conditions resulting from open drinking, which would be detrimental to the community’s health.
Rathi also pointed out that the nearby forest area, developed by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and civil society organizations, would suffer from increased pollution and traffic jams if the liquor shop were established. “Setting up a liquor shop will undermine the efforts to build a green city,” he added.
Residents’ Actions and Requests
The residents have submitted a letter to HSVP requesting the withdrawal of the site allotment for the liquor shop. They have also warned that failure to address the issue will compel them to organize protests and consider legal action to protect their rights and interests.
Official Response
When approached for comments, Renu Sogan, administrator at HSVP, stated that the issue had not been brought to her notice and that the representation must be in the Executive Officer’s office. Belina Rana, estate officer two, who has jurisdiction over the area, did not comment on the matter.
The residents of DLF Phase 1 remain united in their opposition to the proposed liquor shop, determined to maintain the peace, safety, and environmental integrity of their community.
