Darjeeling, July 17, 2024 — The nation stands in solemn tribute to Captain Brijesh Thapa, who lost his life in a fierce gunfight with heavily armed terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda region. Captain Thapa, along with three other Army personnel, made the ultimate sacrifice during the operation on Monday evening.
Captain Thapa’s father, Colonel Bhuwanesh K Thapa (Retd), expressed immense pride in his son’s bravery. “I feel proud of my son. My son has done well in such a risky operation and did it sincerely,” he said, reflecting the sentiments of a family steeped in military tradition. Brijesh was a third-generation Army officer, born on Army Day, January 15, and had always aspired to serve in the Indian Army.
The deceased soldiers have been identified as Naik D Rajesh, Sepoy Bijendra, and Sepoy Ajay, alongside Captain Brijesh Thapa. They were part of a critical mission that ultimately cost them their lives but underscored their dedication and valor.
Captain Thapa, a qualified engineer, chose to join the Indian Army five years ago, driven by a lifelong ambition. At just 27 years old, his dedication and commitment were evident to his family and comrades. His father shared, “He spoke to the family over the phone on July 14. Though he was an engineer, he opted to join the Army. He was a brave soldier who made us proud.”
Captain Thapa’s mortal remains are expected to reach his hometown in Darjeeling on Wednesday. Colonel Bhuwanesh K Thapa (Retd) vowed to salute his son’s body as a soldier, a testament to the honor and pride he holds for his son’s sacrifice. “I could not believe when I was informed that he was no more. Though I am sad, I am proud that he gave his life for Mother India,” he told News18.
Captain Thapa’s mother, Nilima Thapa, shared her grief and pride in her son’s dedication to the country. “He was a very decent guy who always wanted to join the Army. We used to tell him that life in the Army is tough. I am very proud of my son who sacrificed his life for the country,” she told ANI. The family received the heartbreaking news late at night, and while they mourn his loss, they take solace in his honorable service.
The mortal remains of Captain Thapa will be taken to their ancestral home in Lebong on Wednesday morning after a wreath-laying ceremony in Bagdogra. He served with the 145 Air Defence Regiment of the Army and was on deputation to the 10 Rashtriya Rifles at the time of his passing.
The nation grieves with the Thapa family and the families of the other fallen soldiers. Their sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and dedication of the Indian Armed Forces, who stand as the guardians of the nation’s peace and security. As the country honors these heroes, their legacy of courage and selflessness will continue to inspire future generations.
